Brexit, un Disastro: il Regno Unito non Pronto a Tornare nell’UE!

Analisi Decennale Post-Brexit da “The Economist”

A decade after the Brexit referendum, the British weekly “The Economist” assesses the UK’s departure from the European Union as a “terrible mistake” that has left the country “more divided, less influential, and poorer” than if it had remained in the EU.

According to the editorial, the promise to “take back control” of the borders turned out to be “a cruel joke,” while the economic damage has reduced the UK’s GDP by “at least 2.5 percent, and probably much more.” The magazine argues that London has failed to take advantage of the increased flexibility promised by Brexit supporters, and the project of a “Singapore on Thames” has failed, and the state has become more interventionist, more regulatory, and more indebted. “The Economist” notes that today, 57 percent of British people consider Brexit a mistake, compared to 30 percent who continue to support it, but warns that even imagining rejoining the EU as a solution to all problems would be a form of “magical thinking.” The country, according to the weekly, should instead focus on its structural weaknesses: stagnant growth, insufficient productivity, excessive regulation, high energy costs, and delays in investments in artificial intelligence. While hoping for closer relations with Brussels and greater commercial and strategic cooperation with Europe, the editorial concludes that “the UK is not yet ready to rejoin the EU.” For the weekly, the real task of the next decade will be to tackle the difficult reforms that Brexit had deluded voters into believing they could avoid.
